BARN CONVERSION, SURREY HILLS
This kitchen diner forms part of a beautiful barn conversion in the Surrey Hills. A property that is full of character and charm, and a pleasure to work on.
Our clients have lived here for 15 years and wanted to modernise and future proof it by making practicality a priority.
They wanted the new kitchen to feel light and spacious but appropriate to the building and interior style.
The new kitchen uses the same footprint as the previous one but out clients wanted us to re-think the layout to make it feel lighter, and to be more functional in its set-up.
Practicality was key to this design. The clients wanted this new kitchen to be easy to maintain and have the appliances and storage areas that are used the most to be at waist height. There is lots of built-in storage too, including a large larder which is one of the clients’ favourite areas. This houses a lot of items that could otherwise clutter the space and is also at waist height so everything is easily accessible.
Opting for an elegant in-frame shaker style was the obvious choice. The kitchen is from Mereway’s English Revival range in pale grey and really suits this style of property. Using a pale grey colour scheme ensures the kitchen feels light but is a much softer tone than a pure white.
The flecked quartz (Silestone Blanco River) is also pale grey and matches the kitchen perfectly. The natural shine of the quartz helps to reflect light around the space too. We also added under-cabinet lighting which offers a great ambient light solution as well.
With the stable door out to the garden and wooden beams adding a lovely texture to the space, this is a home and kitchen with lots of character. In designing a modern kitchen for this barn conversion, it was so important to ensure these character features were retained and that the overall design felt in keeping with the property.
The in-frame shaker style delivers a classic and timeless look which is complemented beautifully with the traditional butler sink and tap.
Key Appliances
The ovens and induction hob are both by Neff and the country-style tap and sink are by the 1810 Company.
