About This Project
EXTENDED FAMILY HOME, REIGATE
This lovely open plan kitchen diner features a timeless lay on shaker kitchen from the Mereway Lincoln range. The colour scheme is two-toned, a striking gunmetal grey and a pale grey, which suits the house and its interior style perfectly.
With the gunmetal grey you get a lovely depth of colour and when the light hits it, the blue tones come through creating a lovely multi-tonal effect. In addition to the colour scheme, the subtle wood graining on the cabinetry, luxurious velvet bar stools, leather sofas and brass handles make for a homely and stylish family kitchen.
The extension and open plan layout benefits from plenty of natural light and makes the whole area feel incredibly spacious. This is a colourful, warm, inviting home with lots of lovely textures and elegant touches which surround the new kitchen perfectly.
Paines & Gray Kitchen Design
To help our clients decide on the final kitchen design, we created multiple layout options to demonstrate what could work in the space.
At the beginning, our clients were keen to pursue an L-shape kitchen with a peninsula rather than an island. Then having reviewed all the layouts with these options drawn up, they could see that the version with the island made the best use of the space. It was a really useful exercise to have explored each option and then come to a unanimous decision with our designer, Andrew, on what was actually the best design for the room.

From the outset, the plan was always to incorporate an informal seating area in addition to the dining table. The three large comfortable bar stools at the island are ideal for creating a more informal area. They create a natural meeting point and enable anyone working in the kitchen to engage with guests or family seated at the island. The island is a hugely practical storage area too. On the kitchen side, it houses the bin, wine cooler and dishwasher. On the lounge side, it provides ample storage for children’s toys, and arts and crafts supplies.

The shaker style works really well in this house, the mixture of finishes and materials, with modern and more vintage or reclaimed pieces is a natural fit for this type of kitchen. We find that shaker kitchens are so versatile for styling, really lending themselves to the interior style of the home around them. The Silestone White Storm worktops and cool blue glass splashback are great contemporary elements in this classic kitchen design, and reflect lots of light around the space.

The pantry unit is a real feature in this kitchen with an oak carcass and perfectly utilised here as a drinks cabinet. Bespoke to the client’s specification, pantry units are fantastic and stylish storage solutions.
For the final flourishes, the antiqued brass handles used throughout the kitchen, and copper pendant lights hanging over the island really complement this kitchen design.
Key Appliances
Our clients had a clear idea of the appliances they wanted to incorporate into the new kitchen. First on the wish list was a large American style fridge freezer, having enjoyed having one whilst living in a previous house and missed ever since! This Samsung fridge freezer fits the bill perfectly.
Second on the list was to use the original chimney breast for their Stoves Induction Range Cooker. The chimney space was adapted to be able to incorporate the range and an extractor. This is such a great use of the space and adds real character to the kitchen.
The slim and discreet extractor is the Elica ERA.
Incorporated within the island is the Quooker Flex tap, the 1810 sink and Caple wine cooler. We really rate the Quooker range, they look great and most importantly, are very safe for busy family kitchens.
“Andrew was so amenable to us changing our ideas.
He was really accommodating to us changing our minds and was absolutely focussed on getting us exactly what we wanted. He was there the day the kitchen was delivered and personally checked every piece as it came in.”
