About This Project
PERIOD PROPERTY, HORSHAM
This stunning kitchen is the Mereway Charnwood from the Town & Country range. It is a lay-on shaker kitchen painted in Diamond and Pebble Grey with antique brass handles, delivering a timeless style and colour palette for this beautiful period home.
Creating a space to suit family living and entertaining, whilst complementing the character and age of the house was key to this design.
This kitchen was a brilliant restoration project to be involved with and we really enjoyed collaborating with our clients to achieve the end result.
Paines & Gray Kitchen Design
The starting point for this kitchen was actually the sink!
Seen on display in our showroom, our clients immediately loved the large stylish 1810 Company sink in black. Choosing this sink began to inspire design choices throughout the kitchen, aligning modern features with classic design to achieve a sympathetic but contemporary restoration.
As part of the new design, we altered the kitchen layout to move the sink to the island rather than leave it on the back wall. Positioning the sink centrally on the island changed the flow around the kitchen, making it a more practical and sociable space. The Quooker CUBE tap is the cherry on top, providing boiling, filtered and sparkling water.
The big sink is perfect for a family who love to cook and host, and fits all the large Aga pots and pans. As well as being a stylish and practical feature, the sink proved to be the perfect accompaniment to the quartz top chosen for the kitchen island.
This stunning quartz is Calacutta black. The striking black veins of the quartz are contemporary and bold, creating a great contrast between the classic shaker cabinets and the island. The island is a real design statement, especially with the waterfall edge feature, where the quartz continues seamlessly from the worktop down to the floor.

A combination of natural, ambient and task lighting is important in every kitchen but so well executed here. The industrial style pendant lights above the island are a statement but do not take attention away from the beams and character features. Whilst the back lit glass-fronted cabinets provide a lovely soft glow for evening ambient lighting.

When designing a kitchen for a period property, minute attention to detail is required to get symmetry and lines right. This can be challenging working around characterful features, beams and any walls that aren’t straight. We worked closely with the client to ensure that the kitchen nestled into its surroundings rather than overshadowed the period features. Our clients really wanted to ensure that the character of the house still took centre stage in the design and we’re delighted with the end result.
Key Appliances
One of the key pieces in the kitchen is the Fisher & Paykel American style fridge freezer. This was a real wishlist item for the client and it looks absolutely at home in this kitchen. Neff ovens and an induction hob were also added for when the Aga is turned off in the summer. The Caple wine fridge tucked under the island is a must-have in a kitchen ready to entertain, and is ideally placed opposite the main fridge freezer and glassware.
“Having spent some time exploring the market we were recommended to Paines & Gray. We went with them based on a combination of the dialogue we built up with Jim and his expertise, the quality of the equipment and the available flexibility that allowed us to configure a bespoke kitchen for our period property.
We wanted the building frame to be primary with the kitchen comfortably nestled into it – and the configuration we were able to build up with Paines and Gray, installed by their skilled fitter, completely delivered. We feel we have achieved not only a beautiful quality kitchen with a wow factor that highlights the features of the room but one that truly works as a proper family kitchen/living space. We enjoyed the process, are delighted with the finished result and fully recommend Paines & Gray.”
